Tower Defense X: BETA Getting Started with Tower Defense X
Everything a new Roblox player needs before Expert, Endless, and Nightmare.
Tower Defense X (TDX) is a Roblox tower defense created by JOHN ROBLOX and the Tower Defense X group, launching November 21, 2023. You place land, air, and sea towers to stop waves from reaching your base. Unlike classic TD games, TDX towers have HP — enemies can destroy them — and most units offer dual upgrade paths that permanently shape your build. Matches support online co-op, so you can pair with friends or randoms.
This guide covers your first hour: picking a mode, spending currencies wisely, buying starter towers, and linking to deeper pages when you hit difficulty walls.
Install and first launch
- Open Tower Defense X: BETA on Roblox.
- Claim promo rewards on the Codes Hub — strings like
tb4lifeandjohnrobloxforevergrant free Gold, Crystals, or XP. - Skim Controls & Targeting so you know how to sell, upgrade, and change targeting mid-wave.
- Queue Easy or Intermediate until you understand lane flow and tower HP loss.
Difficulty modes explained
TDX scales through six primary labels:
| Mode | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Easy | Forgiving waves; learn placement and economy |
| Intermediate | Introduces mixed unit types and tighter timing |
| Elite | Higher density; air and sea checks appear more often |
| Expert | First major skill check — read How to Beat Expert before grinding |
| Endless | Scaling waves for Gold farming — see Gold Farming |
| Nightmare | Top difficulty — only after consistent Expert clears; see How to Beat Nightmare |
Progression is not strictly linear on every map, but the power gap between Elite and Expert catches most new players. Do not rush Nightmare for clout — bad habits die hard when towers melt in two hits.
Currencies: Gold, Crystals, XP
Gold — earned each wave; pays for tower placement and basic upgrades during the match. Running out mid-wave ends runs fast. Farm towers and Endless mode multiply Gold — core reading in Gold Farming.
Crystals — persistent premium currency from codes, events, and milestones. Spend on dual path nodes and high-tier unlocks. Never dump Crystals before reading Dual Path Upgrades.
XP — account level progression unlocking modes, towers, or cosmetics depending on patch. Code redemptions and repeated clears both contribute.
Your first tower roster
You do not need every unit on day one. Prioritize coverage across movement types:
Land DPS — Juggernaut anchors single-target damage and survives hits better than glass cannons. Golden Juggernaut is a late upgrade goal, not a day-one buy.
Air defense — EDJ (Explosive Defense Jet) handles swarms and flying paths many beginners ignore until Expert. Laser Gunner offers consistent beam damage for armored air.
Sea / hybrid — Warship and Mine Layer cover water lanes on coastal maps. If a map shows blue paths, bring sea tools or you will leak regardless of land DPS.
Economy — Farm pays for itself over several waves. One player in co-op often commits to Farms while others spend early on DPS.
Support — Medic heals tower HP; Operator buffs nearby units. Both matter more from Elite upward when enemies focus-fire structures.
Burst / boss — Railgunner and Missile Trooper excel against high-HP targets. Save them for Expert boss waves rather than spamming on Easy.
Cross-check priorities on the Tier List after your first evening of play — metas shift when JOHN ROBLOX patches numbers.
Dual paths: do not guess
At mid-upgrade tiers, towers split into Path A and Path B. The choice is often permanent for that run’s strategy. Early picks like Juggernaut cleave vs single-target or EDJ cluster vs sustained DPS define whether you can beat Expert air splits. Full breakdown: Dual Path Upgrades.
Co-op basics
When joining public co-op:
- Call what you are buying — duplicate Farms help, duplicate pure DPS without economy does not.
- Cover opposite lanes when the map splits; do not stack every tower on one choke.
- Watch tower HP; if enemies peel left while your Medic sits right, rotate or rebuild.
- Share knowledge, not toxicity — Nightmare players remember who communicated.
First-session checklist
- Redeem active codes from Codes Hub via How to Redeem.
- Clear Easy and Intermediate on two different maps to see land vs sea layouts.
- Buy Juggernaut, EDJ, and one Farm; practice upgrading mid-wave using Controls.
- Push Elite until leaks are rare; bank Gold using Gold Farming tips.
- Read How to Beat Expert and attempt Expert with a planned dual-path build.
Common beginner mistakes
Ignoring air — Ground-only stacks fail the moment flying enemies spawn. Always slot air DPS.
Maxing the wrong path — Crystals are finite. Respec costs hurt; plan paths before purchasing.
Selling too late — TDX refunds partial Gold but leaking lives is worse. Learn sell timing in Controls.
Skipping codes — Free Gold accelerates your first Expert-ready roster. Check community strings after each update.
Solo ego on Nightmare — Nightmare expects coordination. Build Expert muscle in co-op first.
Where to go next

- Dual Path Upgrades — path choices for every core tower
