Tower Defense X: BETA Expert Mode Tier List
Path rankings for the second-hardest beatable mode and its boss finale.
Expert Mode is Tower Defense X’s proving ground: tower-killing enemies, frequent air units, percentage-based boss attacks, and a finale pairing Destructor with Eradicator MK II+. This tier list ranks every path by Expert viability— not raw Easy damage—so you invest in survivors, not placeholders.
Pair this page with How to Beat Expert, Best Loadouts (Fort Classic remains the budget reference), and the Tier List Hub for S/A context. Map Strategy matters because straight segments favor Railgunner while multi-lane maps demand split coverage.
Expert ranking criteria
Paths score on boss damage, stealth and air handling, tower survivability (healing, shields, spacing), economy under No Cash pressure, and co-op synergy. Dual paths are listed separately when they diverge.
S-tier Expert paths
EDJ top path — Range and fire-rate buffs for Railgunner, Juggernaut, and Laser Gunner clusters. Encore ability timing separates good Expert clears from failed wave 30 trios (Phoebus, Zeus, Artemis).
EDJ bottom path — 30% upgrade discounts on expensive lines. Mandatory before maxing Railgunner bottom and Golden Juggernaut. Stacks with Farm economy.
Railgunner bottom path — Primary boss killer with piercing line damage and stun immunity. Weak to stealth without support—pair with Laser Gunner X-3 stealth sensor or Ghost drones.
Laser Gunner (stealth upgrades) — Single-target DPS plus stealth detection. Cleans Pilot, Skull Drone, and Buzzard lanes that wipe unprepared teams.
Golden Juggernaut — Ignore bullet resistance on bosses like Super Heavy Titan. Short range demands EDJ range buffs and careful placement at chokepoints.
Juggernaut (Power Minigun path) — Budget Golden Juggernaut substitute. Lacks bullet resistance ignore—supplement with Laser Gunner.
John top path — Damage amplification for Railgunner and Juggernaut stacks. Cheap bait bodies absorb X Soldier chip damage.
Missile Trooper 5-X — Boss DPS with main-target bonus and resist bypass. Less scaling than Railgunner but excellent through mid-Expert.
Farm — Funds expensive Expert upgrades when damage cash slows. Run one dedicated economy player in co-op.
Mobster bottom path — Bounty income when enemies grant limited cash—strong Expert alternative when Farm feels slow.
Medic — Heals tower HP when Eradicator and Destructor focus fire. Climbs to S-tier in four-player coordinated runs.
A-tier Expert paths
Shield Tower — Reduces burst damage from percentage-based Artemis attacks and Eradicator abilities.
Sniper — Long-range air and summon cleanup for Zeus and Artemis phases.
Shotgunner top path — 30% heal aura keeps stunned towers alive during Plague Doctor–style mechanics and general tower focus.
Operator / Toxicnator — Horde control for Bounded timers and grouped X Soldiers.
Ghost (C7 Drone) — Stealth reveal alternative if Laser Gunner slots are tight.
Commander — Damage buffs for Railgunner when John slots are full.
B-tier Expert paths
Artillery — Splash for grouped ground units; outclassed by Railgunner on boss waves.
Warship — Map locked; S-tier on water-heavy Expert maps, B-tier elsewhere.
Barracks / Patrol Boat — Only on long water maps; Expert’s pace often punishes summon delay.
Ranger Assault loadout — Resistance ignore niche; Missile Trooper covers similar ground faster.
Cryo Blaster — Cannot freeze multipliers; limited vs air.
C-tier and avoid on Expert
Und upgraded spam towers, pure stall without DPS, and paths lacking stealth or air tools. Bottom-path Railgunner without reveal support fails Phoebus lanes. Top-path EDJ Super Encore on bottom-path Railgunner wastes buffs—aim time does not shrink from fire-rate boosts.
Boss phase priorities
Waves 1–20: establish Farm or Mobster, Laser Gunner stealth, and one horde tool. Waves 20–29: mini-bosses demand Missile Trooper or Railgunner investments. Wave 30 trio: focus Artemis first while Phoebus shields—Zeus buffs require burst DPS. Final bosses: save abilities, EDJ Encore, and Railgunner shots for Destructor leaps and Eradicator MK II+ ability chains. Medic and Shield Tower windows decide whether your maxed towers survive the last ten waves.
Co-op role split
Player one: Farm + EDJ. Player two: Laser Gunner + stealth coverage. Player three: Railgunner rush. Player four: Golden Juggernaut or Juggernaut + John buffs. Adjust on Map Strategy when lanes split early.
After patches, verify path costs on Rebalance and Updates Hub. Endless specialists should continue to Endless Tier List after Expert mastery.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
What is the best Expert Mode loadout in TDX?
Fort Classic remains the standard: Laser Gunner, John, Farm, EDJ, Railgunner, and Juggernaut. Swap Juggernaut for Golden Juggernaut when unlocked.
Why is EDJ S-tier if it deals no damage?
Expert requires maxed Railgunner and Juggernaut. EDJ range buffs, fire-rate buffs, and 30% upgrade discounts shorten that grind and increase boss DPS.
How do I handle Expert air enemies?
Laser Gunner stealth upgrades, Sniper, or Ghost drones. Pilot and Buzzard punish loadouts with only ground-focused DPS.
Should I bring Farm to Expert Mode?
Yes in most teams. Expert upgrade costs exceed Elite damage income. Co-op often dedicates one player to Farm plus EDJ economy.
Does this tier list apply to Nightmare Mode?
Partially. Nightmare demands additional picks like AA Turret, Refractor, and Behemoth Factory. Use this as a foundation, then read the Nightmare Tier List for path updates.
What towers counter enemies that destroy my defenses?
Medic heals, Shield Tower mitigates bursts, Shotgunner top-path heals, and John bait spacing absorb X Soldier and boss focus fire.
