Tower Defense X: BETA Mode Picker
Find the right difficulty to grind based on where you are in TDX.
Tower Defense X modes are not strictly linear, but rewards, enemy mechanics, and tower requirements scale in a clear ladder. Use this picker when you wonder whether to stay on Intermediate farm, push Expert, or try Endless for leaderboard XP.
Cross-check tower readiness with the Loadout Checker and unit rankings on the tier list. Redeem everything on the codes page before long sessions.

Pick by account stage
Stage 1 — First sessions (Ranger only, under level 10)
Play: Easy on any starter map.
Why: Learn pathing, sell/refund rules, and dual upgrade paths without air or boss pressure.
Goals before moving on:
- Clear at least one Easy map with no leaks
- Redeem codes (
johnrobloxforever,tb4life) for gold and XP boosts - Read the getting started guide
Do not queue: Expert, Endless, or Nightmare — you lack economy and role coverage.
Stage 2 — Early unlocks (Shotgunner, Farm, Missile Trooper)
Play: Intermediate farm on maps you know.
Why: Intermediate pays better than Easy and forces anti-air (Missile Trooper) and economy (Farm) habits.
Unlock priorities:
- Farm — income for mid-game upgrades
- Missile Trooper — reliable air coverage
- Operator — stronger early DPS and flexible open
Goals before moving on:
- Stable Intermediate clears with Farm online early
- At least one splash tower (Grenadier or Cryo Blaster) leveled
- Comfortable reading wave preview icons (air, fast, stealth)
Optional: Elite maps once Intermediate feels easy — treat Elite as practice, not main farm.
Stage 3 — Mid progression (EDJ, Medic, level 20–40)
Play: Elite primary farm; Expert attempts on Singularity or maps you study.
Why: Expert requires EDJ buffs, Medic heals, and maxed DPS. Elite teaches boss pacing without full Expert punishment.
Unlock priorities:
- EDJ — mandatory for Expert DPS checks
- Medic — tower sustain during long bosses
- Second DPS tower maxed on one path (Laser Gunner, Juggernaut, or Railgunner tier picks from the tier list)
Goals before moving on:
- Clear Elite reliably with no missing roles (use Loadout Checker)
- One Expert clear — even bronze — to learn boss order
- Stock consumables from codes and event rewards
Stage 4 — Expert stable (core roster maxed, level 40+)
Play: Expert farm for crystals and XP; Endless for leaderboard pushes.
Why: Expert is the main efficiency loop once clears are consistent. Endless converts maxed loadouts into long-session value.
When to farm Expert:
- You bring EDJ, Medic, anti-air, splash, and Farm every run
- You know boss abilities (Predator, Phoebus/Zeus/Artemis, VX-Drone, Destructor, Eradicator MK II+)
- You adjust targeting (e.g., weakest on air for drones)
When to try Endless:
- Expert clears are repeatable, not lucky
- You have time for 30+ minute sessions
- You want leaderboard rank over fast crystal-per-minute
Stage 5 — Endgame (Nightmare, perks, full collection)
Play: Nightmare with modifier-specific loadouts; mop-up masteries on Expert/Endless.
Why: Nightmare adds modifiers that punish generic rosters. Only grind here when Expert is boring.
Prerequisites:
- Multiple maxed DPS towers with both paths chosen intentionally
- Full role coverage under pressure (see loadout checker Nightmare row)
- Updated knowledge from updates — perks and tower discounts change the meta
Pick by goal
| Your goal | Recommended mode | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Fast gold for unlocks | Intermediate (known map) | Stack Farm upgrades early |
| XP for level gates | Expert or Endless | Expert if you clear; Endless if you survive long |
| Crystals | Expert | Repeat maps with tower perks that discount your roster |
| Learn a new map | Easy → Intermediate → Elite | Never first-clear Expert blind |
| Leaderboard | Endless | Max EDJ stack and sustain |
| Challenge run | Nightmare | Read modifier list before queue |
When to step down
Step back one difficulty if:
- You leak the same wave three times with the same loadout
- You lack a required role (no air, no EDJ, no Medic on boss maps)
- Upgrades are late because Farm was skipped
- You are learning a new tower — test on Intermediate first
Stepping down is faster XP per hour than wiping on Expert wave 5 repeatedly.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Should I rush Expert as soon as I unlock it?
No. Unlock access is not the same as being ready. Farm Intermediate until you have Farm, anti-air, splash, EDJ, and Medic online. Early Expert wipes waste time compared to stable Intermediate gold runs.
Is Endless better than Expert for XP?
Only if you survive long enough. A quick Expert clear often beats a short Endless run. Endless wins when your loadout scales past wave 50+ consistently.
When does Nightmare become worth it?
After repeatable Expert clears and maxed core towers. Nightmare modifiers need spare cash and flexible placement. Treat it as prestige content, not your first crystal farm.
