Tower Defense X: BETA Beginner Tower Tier List

Unlock order and path picks for Easy through Intermediate progression.

Beginner Tier List

Starting Tower Defense X with forty-plus towers and two paths each feels overwhelming. This beginner tier list ranks which towers to buy first, which paths matter at low investment, and what you can safely ignore until you beat Intermediate and approach Expert. It complements the Getting Started guide and the full Tier List Hub.

TDX released on November 21, 2023 on Roblox and supports online co-op. Even beginners benefit from joining public Intermediate lobbies—watch how teammates place Farm, stagger upgrades, and save for Missile Trooper boss waves. Claim Codes for gold boosts before your first serious grind.

Ranking criteria for beginners

We rank paths by gold efficiency, mode coverage from Easy through Intermediate, and teaching value for mechanics you need later: stealth, resistances, tower HP loss, and abilities. End-game monsters like Golden Juggernaut are noted but not expected on day one.

S-tier beginner picks

Missile Trooper (both paths, prioritize top for general use) — The best early generalist. Good damage, crowd control, bullet-resistance bypass, and strong 5-X boss DPS. Works in every beatable mode except Endless, where scaling demands heavier investments. Buy this before most premium towers.

Farm (both paths) — Teaches economy management. Wave income funds upgrades faster than spamming cheap towers. Core in Easy, Intermediate, and Expert; skip or reduce in Elite where damage cash suffices. Bottom path synergizes with long Expert runs; top path is fine for beginners.

Operator (top path first) — Handles early hordes and introduces ability timing. Moderate sustained damage with a low price tag. Pair with Shotgunner on Easy and Intermediate.

Shotgunner (top path for healing utility) — Shreds grouped enemies and teaches micro. Top-path ability heals nearby towers by 30% max HP—valuable once Predator mini-bosses appear in Intermediate. Bottom path adds stun utility for Elite prep.

Laser Gunner (stealth path investments early) — S-tier in the full meta; for beginners, unlock after Missile Trooper and Farm. Even mid upgrades provide stealth detection that Easy mode introduces and Intermediate demands constantly.

A-tier beginner picks

Ranger — Cheap bridge tower for Easy. Bottom-path grenades help against Plague Doctor summons on Intermediate. Falls off without Assault loadout resistance ignore.

Patrol Boat — A-tier only on maps with water (Oil Rig, Farlands-style layouts). Teaches placement restrictions. Skip on land-only maps.

Barracks — Strong on long curved maps; weak on short straight paths. Summoner mechanics preview Warship and factory lines later.

Sniper — Flying enemy answer for Intermediate and Elite bosses. Lower priority than Missile Trooper but worth owning before Expert air waves.

John (top path later, cheap placement always) — Dirt-cheap bait tower. Beginners use base John for early waves; invest in top path once you approach Expert for damage amps on Railgunner and Juggernaut.

B-tier for new players

Grenadier — Horde stall on waterless maps when Patrol Boat cannot slot. B-tier until you need Elite crowd control.

Mine Layer — Rewards patience on long maps (Metal Muncher loadout). Poor on short paths.

Cryo Blaster — Slows enemies but cannot freeze multipliers. Situational teaching tool, not a priority purchase.

Ranger-only loadouts — Viable Easy solo on forgiving maps like Ancient Sky Island; B-tier overall for progression.

C-tier and skip-for-now

Cosmetic-adjacent spends (skins, emotes, vending consumables) are never tiered here—do not buy them early. Towers like Warship, Golden Juggernaut, EDJ, and Railgunner are end-game S-tier but beginner C-tier for unlock order because of cost. Save them for after Intermediate clears and gold stockpiling. Helicopter and other premium units stay C-tier until you understand map dependency.

Week one: Operator, Shotgunner, Missile Trooper, Farm. Week two: Laser Gunner, Ranger, Sniper. Week three: EDJ, John, Railgunner, Juggernaut—then read the Expert Tier List and Best Loadouts. Map knowledge accelerates everything on Map Strategy.

Path tips beginners miss

Upgrade one tower deeply before placing duplicates. Place Farm during waves 5–10 on Intermediate when defense feels stable. Bring stealth detection before wave 15 on Intermediate. When Predator appears wave 29, protect towers with spacing and Shotgunner heals. Multipliers grant No Cash—do not panic-spend on unnecessary slots.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

What is the first tower I should buy in TDX?

Operator or Shotgunner for early clears, then Missile Trooper and Farm. That quartet carries Easy and Intermediate efficiently.

Should beginners buy EDJ or Railgunner first?

Neither immediately. Unlock Missile Trooper, Farm, and Laser Gunner first. Save EDJ and Railgunner for Expert prep when upgrade costs justify support investment.

Is Farm worth it in Elite Mode as a beginner?

No. Elite gives enough cash from damage that Farm slots are better spent on DPS or crowd control like Shotgunner or Grenadier.

When should I start Expert Mode?

After beating Intermediate comfortably, owning Laser Gunner and Missile Trooper upgrades, and reading the Expert Tier List plus How to Beat Expert guide.

Do beginner tiers match the main tier list?

Not always. Golden Juggernaut is S-tier overall but low priority for unlock order. This list optimizes progression, not absolute power.
