Tower Defense X: BETA Tower Defense X Map Strategy
Placement, chokepoints, and mode-specific map tactics.
Maps in Tower Defense X are not cosmetic reskins. Each layout changes path length, lane count, water coverage, air approach angles, and which towers from your Best Loadouts actually perform. A Fort Classic Expert build dominates on a long straight map and struggles on a short multi-turn layout without adjustment. This guide teaches placement fundamentals and map-specific tactics for land, air, and sea coverage.
Pair map reading with the Towers Overview for water-only units, the Expert Tier List for boss lanes, and Endless Tier List when Warship scaling matters. New players learn basics in Getting Started.
Core placement principles
Chokepoints — Enemies stack where paths narrow or turn. Stack Railgunner, Juggernaut, Golden Juggernaut, Toxicnator, and Shotgunner at chokes for maximum shots per second. EDJ buff radius should cover these clusters, not empty grass.
Path length — Long maps favor Barracks summons, Mine Layer, and Warship sustained DPS. Short maps favor burst boss killers and less summoner investment.
Lane count — Split paths require duplicated coverage or high-range Railgunner / Sniper lines. Co-op assigns one player per major lane before wave one.
Tower HP spacing — Boss delete mechanics in Endless punish tight clumps. Spread high-value towers so Calamity-style attacks do not wipe an entire EDJ-Railgunner stack.
Elevation and air — Flying enemies (Pilot, Buzzard, Skull Drone) shortcut over ground-only coverage. Place Laser Gunner or Sniper with sight lines to air corridors, not just ground chokes.
Land placement
Most maps are land-first. Priority order:
- Place cheap starter (John, Operator) at first choke.
- Farm slightly back—safe from early tower damage but within eventual buff range.
- Laser Gunner at first stealth exposure point (often mid-map turn).
- EDJ centered on your late-game kill box before maxing Railgunner.
- Boss killers at final choke before the exit; Juggernaut range is short—use EDJ top path.
Ground-only maps include many Easy and Intermediate layouts. Skip Patrol Boat and Warship unless a puddle or dock segment exists.
Water and sea placement
Patrol Boat and Warship require water tiles. Maps like Oil Rig and water-heavy Endless layouts elevate Farlands loadouts (Barracks + Patrol Boat) from niche to optimal. Without water:
- Swap Patrol Boat for Grenadier or Missile Trooper.
- Do not bench a loadout slot on empty water—check map preview before queuing.
Warship placement favors longest water sightline toward spawn. Pair with land-side EDJ if buff radius reaches dock positions—note EDJ cannot buff some naval units the same way as land towers; verify current patch behavior on Rebalance.
Air placement
Expert and Endless introduce frequent flyers. Air strategy:
- Identify air entry waves in practice runs (Pilot rushes surprise teams without detection).
- Laser Gunner stealth upgrades at map centroid often cover both ground choke and air path.
- Sniper on high ground equivalents (longest range segment) for Buzzard and Skull Drone cleanup.
- Nightmare demands AA Turret on air-heavy gauntlets—see Expert Tier List Nightmare notes.
Ground towers without detection cannot target stealthed or airborne enemies even at chokepoints.
Map examples and loadout fit
Oil Rig / Ancient Sky Island / Apocalypse (Easy-friendly) — Longer paths, often water segments. Forgiving for beginners; Ranger solo Easy is viable. Farlands and Warship loadouts shine. See Beginner Tier List.
Chalet / Military Harbor (Harder Easy) — Shorter paths, tighter turns, less water. Prefer Shotgun Shell or Round About over Barracks. Railgunner value drops without straight segments—add Missile Trooper boss focus.
Fort-style Expert maps — Straight segments toward base ideal for Fort Classic: Railgunner lines, John bait at front, EDJ behind kill box. Reference How to Beat Expert.
Endless water maps — Warship and XWM Turret climb to S-tier; land-only boss killers still needed for mixed resist waves pre-40.
Mode-specific map tactics
Easy / Intermediate — Learn map spawn timing. Ancient Sky Island teaches long-path Farm timing; Chalet teaches short-path burst.
Elite — Horde maps need wider splash coverage at mid chokes. No Cash multipliers punish greedy forward Farm placement—keep economy towers protected.
Expert — Tower-killing enemies punish forward placement. John bait at outer chokes; real DPS deeper with Medic backup.
Endless — Post-40 boss spawn every ten waves—memorize map corners where Eradicator MK IV approaches. Pre-place Medic range on expected delete targets.
Nightmare — Combines worst boss mechanics; use Shield Tower anchors at team-defended chokes.
Co-op map coordination
Assign lanes by map preview:
- Player A: Lane with earliest air exposure (Laser Gunner).
- Player B: Longest ground choke (Railgunner / Golden Juggernaut).
- Player C: Economy safe zone (Farm + EDJ).
- Player D: Water lane or flex Medic.
Ping chokepoints in chat pre-wave. Upgrade timing should stagger so one lane is not empty during split waves.
Common map mistakes
Maxing Railgunner on a map where enemies split before final choke. Placing EDJ off-center so half the kill box misses buffs. Bringing Patrol Boat to land-only Military Harbor. Clumping towers for Expert Destructor leap wipes. Ignoring air approach on Expert Pilot waves.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Do all TDX maps have water for Warship?
No. Chalet and several land-focused maps lack usable water. Preview the map or read community notes before slotting Patrol Boat or Warship.
Where should I place EDJ on most maps?
Center EDJ so its buff radius covers your main choke cluster—typically the final turn before exit where Railgunner and Juggernaut sit.
What maps are best for beginners?
Oil Rig, Ancient Sky Island, and Apocalypse are forgiving Easy maps with longer paths. Military Harbor and Chalet are harder starter options.
How does map choice affect tier lists?
Water maps boost Warship and Patrol Boat tiers. Short maps demote Barracks and Mine Layer. Always adjust tier picks to layout, not just mode.
Why do I lose Expert runs on the same loadout?
Different Expert maps emphasize air lanes, split paths, or short chokes. Fort Classic assumes reasonable straight segments—adapt placement per map.
